Working on Windows 8

My dear hubby gifted me an expensive and the latest laptop on our 11th marriage anniversary. The most exciting thing about it is it has newest Windows 8 operating system on it. It feels like now I’m running with the technology.. and it takes time to find simple things on Windows 8, like

1. How to restart your computer with Windows 8 :
Move your mouse (or finger if on touch screen monitor), from right top corner to pop up side bar options with “Search Start Settings Share Devices” options. Click on “Settings” and find there “Power”. Clicking on it will give you “Restart sleep shutdown” options.

2. Where is my handy-dandy notepade? :
Move your mouse (or finger if on touch screen monitor), from right top corner to pop up side bar options with “Search Start Settings Share Devices” options. Click on “Search” option which will pop-up another “SEARCH BAR”. Type in whatever you want to find, like “notepad” and it will show it there. Drag it to “Start” tiles and you’ve pinned your new app right there.

3. How I installed XAMPP on Windows 8 :
. Downloaded the latest release of XAMPP for Windows from http://www.apachefriends.org. It lists upto Windows 7 options, but I tried to install XAMPP with Installer.exe. And everything worked fine. I checked php and mysql testing right away and it is working fine. So now I have latest releases like : Apache 2.4.2, MySQL 5.5.27, PHP 5.4.7, OpenSSL 1.0.1c, phpMyAdmin 3.5.2.2, XAMPP Control Panel 3.1.0, Webalizer 2.23-04, Mercury Mail Transport System v4.62, FileZilla FTP Server 0.9.41, Tomcat 7.0.30 (with mod_proxy_ajp as connector), Strawberry Perl 5.16.0.1 Portable
(For Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7). Successfully Working on Windows 8.
(I installed these on January 2, 2013).

Next, I will install and work on WordPress 3.5.

4. Installing WordPress 5 (or latest wordpress on local host) on my Windows 8 :

Downloaded latest available WordPress Zip to the machine and followed instructions on WikiHow to install WordPress on my machine (on January 4, 2013). Successfully installed it and off to develop a brand new website through WordPress for a brand new, luxury clothier company, named Vintage Grapes Clothier. (Started on January 5, 2013).

Already created 4 static pages within 3 hours (without any styles though) : Home page with images slide show, About us with an image and a text and a Contact Us page with a Contact form. Although I realized that I need to activate a plug-in name JetPack which can work on online website only. So, I’ve started uploading on my own domain, myreadinglog.net/blog/VGC. Will send the work to the Client and will wait for approval and further ideas. (Off for REAL WORK)…
